Hello. I'm Richard Ager. Welcome to NH Outlook. We're at St. Paul's School in Concord, to begin our look at the remarkable but little-known life of John Gilbert Winant. Born to a well-off family in New York, Winant attended St. Paul's where he proved to be a mediocre student but a natural leader.

Graphic/Photo: One subject he excelled in was history - in particular the life of Abraham Lincoln.
Track: After graduation, Winant stayed here to teach history. He became involved in NH politics, and went on to become the first governor to serve three terms - two of them during the Great Depression.
Bite: Winant Disk 1 12:10:40 He was a Republican, he loved Lincoln and the party of Lincoln.
Track: Winant also admired President Franklin Roosevelt - a Democrat - and offered his help.
Bite: Winant Disk 1 12:12:30 I think he was actually a very caring person who did an awful lot with Roosevelt's help to get NH out of the mess it was in. We had massive unemployment - it was something like 28 or 30%.
Track: FDR appointed Winant to a number of posts including the first commissioner of the Social Security Administration. But his greatest role would unfold along with the great calamity of World War Two.
It is the subject of a new book, Citizens of London. Author Lynne Olson paints a portrait of three Americans and the vital role they played in the Allied Victory in World War Two.
Bite: Winant Disk 1 11:18:48 "NOW TWO OF THE THREE ARE VERY WELL KNOWN-ARE KNOWN BY MANY AMERICANS. THE FIRST IS EDWARD R. MURROW, THE LEGENDARY CBS NEWSMAN WHO BECAME A HOUSEHOLD NAME IN THE UNITED STATES UH, AS A RESULT OF HIS REPORTING FROM THE ROOFTOPS OF LONDON DURING THE BLITZ AND BATTLE OF BRITAIN. THE SECOND IS AVERILL HARRIMAN WHO, BACK THEN, WAS AN AMBITIOUS, HARD-DRIVING, MULTI-MILLIONAIRE BUSINESSMAN WHO WAS SENT TO LONDON IN MARCH 1941 TO OVERSEE LEND LEASE AID TO BRITAIN." 11:19:21:17
Bite: Winant Disk 1 11:19:22:09 "AND THE THIRD MAN WAS…JOHN GILBERT WINANT. A MAN WHO-HAS BEEN ALMOST TOTALLY FORGOTTEN IN HIS OWN COUNTRY…BUT IN MANY WAYS WAS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OF THE THREE. AS YOU ALL KNOW, HE WAS THE U.S. AMBASSADOR TO BRITAIN FROM 1941 TO 1946. REPLACING JOSEPH KENNEDY WHO WENT BACK TO THE UNITED STATES IN '41-LATE 1940-DECLARING 'ENGLAND IS GONE, AND I'M FOR APPEASEMENT 100 PERCENT." ACTUALLY 1000 PERCENT.11:19:56:05

I THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US Thank you.
After Winant's suicide in 1947, the rector of St. Paul's refused permission for burial on school grounds. In 1968 Winant's remains were quietly moved to the school's burial lot. On his gravestone, it reads "…it is the things of the spirit that in the end prevail."
